I love you rightside up and
I love you upside down.
I love you when you’re happy and
I love you when you frown.
I love you when you’re naughty
I love you when you’re nice.
I love you in the steamy heat
and even on the ice.
I love you with a dirty pants
and fresh out of the tub.
I love you, messy marker girl
I love your rub-a-dub.
I love you when your teeth come in
And still when they fall out.
Love that big, toothless grin
Even when you pout.
I love you when you’re timid
And I love you when you’re bold.
I love you when you’re well-behaved
And even when I scold.
I loved those tiny hands and feet
Before you could yet crawl
I love you walking, rocking, roll
I love you when you fall.
I know each freckle, dimple, scar
I’ve studied you so close
From busy lips and silky hair
Right down to wiggly toes.
I wrote this poem for my daughter when she couldn’t even hold her head up (March 2011) . Now (2018), she’s missing her two front teeth and she’s writing poetry of her own. I was inspired by a strawberry mark she had on her sweet little foot (hemangioma), and I loved her so much for that. I accepted and embraced every part of her… as much as I could as she HATED being a baby. That was not for her. But I stuck with her through that phase until she could do anything she wanted. I feel so lucky every day to have her. Happy Mother’s Day! Aren’t we just so lucky?
